Oak Hall School Performs "Caribbean Currents"

A group of teens found themselves shipwrecked and on trial before a council of Caribbean gods on remote Andros Island in the Bahamas in the school’s recent performance entitled “Caribbean Currents.” The comedic mayhem, music and a fantasy adventure ensue and the teens find themselves flung from one island to the next, discovering the music unique to each island culture as they search for a mythical instrument from the lost continent of Atlantis.

“Caribbean Currents” was conceived by Oak Hall’s instrumental music program founder Roger Nubern and the school performing arts director Dr. William Eyerly, last summer before Nubern’s sudden and tragic death in October. Based on the “River of Rhythm” concept developed by Nubern, the “Caribbean Currents” script builds on last year’s acclaimed "Songs Beyond the Silk Road", an Asian-themed adventure written by Eyerly.

“I couldn't think of a more fitting tribute to my colleague and friend than continuing the work he started and shared with me beginning with our collaboration last year,” Eyerly said.

Theatre-goers were rewarded with a healthy dose of comedy, stunning costumes and music from the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica and Trinidad. In addition to familiar traditional "rake and scrape", reggae, soca, and calypso tunes, additional lyrics and music by Nubern, Eyerly and Oak Hall's current music director Jason Stahl were featured.

"Roger Nubern's music and vision are prominent in the show," Eyerly adds.

Guest artists from the Oak Hall faculty, including professional actors and musicians from the region rounded out the cast.
