Newberry Village Gains Approval

After a five-hour special meeting, the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners reached an agreement with Newberry Village. The lynch-pin was the addition of the county’s first bus rapid transit system, which will feature bus-dedicated lanes on Fort Clarke Blvd. and will travel to the Oaks Mall.

Newberry Village, which will be located at the corner of Fort Clarke Blvd. and Newberry Rd., will have 900 residences. The developer, New Urban Works, also agreed to reduce commercial space from 240,000 square feet to 180,000 square feet. There also will be 60,000 square feet of office space.

Newberry Village will pay for the bus lane on Fort Clarke Blvd. through the development. It will connect to 76th Blvd. and then to Newberry Rd.

Prior to the agreement, Newberry Village had faced some legal challenges related to the amount of traffic it would put onto the already-over-capacity Newberry Rd.
