Newberry Watermelon Festival
The 63rd annual Newberry Watermelon Festival will be held on Saturday, May 17 at Canterbury Equestrian Showplace on W. Newberry Rd. The festival will open with a parade at 9 a.m. and the Watermelon Queen will be crowned at 6:30 p.m.

Pro-Am Golf Tournament and Auction
Ronald McDonald House of Gainesville will host a Pro-Am Golf Tournament and auction on Friday-Saturday, May 30-31, at Haile Plantation Golf and Country Club.
The event will begin with a Friday, May 30 reception and auction (Open to the public) 7 p.m. (Doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at the Best Western Gateway Grand Hotel on NW 97th Blvd.
The Pro-Am Golf Tournament and Auction is the signature fundraising event of the Ronald McDonald House of Gainesville. By participating in the event, you can make a difference in the lives of families with critically ill children.
Teams will play a 5-person scramble comprised of (4) amateur golfers plus a PGA or LPGA golf professional. Last year, the tournament sold out quickly with 300 golfers.
The two-day fundraiser includes both a silent and live auction to be held during a reception, which is open to the public and will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday May 30, at the Best Western Gateway Grand Hotel. More than 300 extravagant auction items were donated to the event last year. Tickets are $35 each or two for $50 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.
All proceeds from the golf tournament will stay local and benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Gainesville. Together, we can make miracles happen.

Junque To Jewels Rummage Sale
The Congregation B’nai Israel Sisterhood is holding its “Junque to Jewels” rummage sale, which will support its programs and educational causes, on Friday, June 6, and Sunday June 8, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The sale will be held – rain or shine – in the B’nai Israel Social Hall, 3830 NW 16th Blvd.
“Junque to Jewels” will feature furniture, home goods, toys, real and costume jewelry, and an eclectic variety of collectibles. Drop off your donations between Monday, June 2-Thursday, June 5, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the B’nai Israel Social Hall.

Al'z Place Needs Volunteers
Al’z Place, a not for profit adult daycare center for individuals with Alzheimer’s near Santa Fe Community College, needs help this summer and throughout the year. No special training is necessary - just a willingness to help. Volunteers may assist with cognitive, physical and musical activities, as well as interact with the clients. Shands Auxiliary Volunteers Needed
The Shands Auxiliary has volunteer opportunities for caring men and women. You will have the privilege of helping patients and their families, many of whom are far from home and facing major medical treatment. There are a wide variety of service areas that need volunteers. Picture yourself cuddling babies, escorting a patient to surgery, helping families who are waiting for their loved one's surgery, delivering mail to patients or providing service with a smile in the hospital gift shop. AARP Driver Safety Program
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Driver Safety Program is designed to address the needs, concerns and physical changes of the mature driver, age 50 and older. The two-day course (4 hours per day) helps refine existing skills and develop safe defensive driving techniques. There are not any written or driving tests. The certificate of completion qualifies graduates for an auto insurance discount. The course costs $10. For information, call 333-3036.
CERT Classes
The Alachua County Division of Emergency Management has scheduled three new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training classes. The classes will meet on Tuesdays nights for seven weeks from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Classes and course materials are free to the public. Free classes are held at the
A CERT is a group of citizens that receives special training (CERT training classes) which enhances their ability to recognize, respond to and recover from a major emergency or disaster situation. When a major emergency overwhelms normally available resources, such as emergency responders, response delays of hours or even days may occur. Training includes the following: Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, Disaster Medical Operations, Light Search and Rescue, Disaster Psychology and Team Organization and Terrorism and CERT.
Upon successful course completion, each team member will receive a FEMA/EMI training Certificate. Only team members 18 years and older will be eligible for the certificate, but children aged 14 and up may participate in the classes if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The three classes will take place on the following dates: June 10-July 22 (registration ends on June 6); August 5-September 16 (registration ends on August 1); October 7-November 18 (registration ends on October 3). Class size will be limited to 25, interested parties are encouraged to register early.
